When you arrive in Queenstown, whether by road or by plane, the first thing that will strike you is the beauty of the surrounding mountains as they tower over Lake Wakatipu, the focus point of the city. So when we visited New Zealand’s southern city this winter, it was a no-brainer to find somewhere with a view out over the lake and mountains, which made Kamana Lakehouse an obvious choice. Nestled in a quiet area just outside of the centre of Queenstown, Kamana Lakehouse is the perfect place to relax and unwind, but still within easy reach of the city centre.
The Room
When we first stepped into our room we were completely blown away by the view, as well as the sheer size of the private terrace outside – the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the lake. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable – perfect to rest up after our day trip to Glenorchy, just north of Queenstown (and one of the most stunning drives in the country – you can’t miss it!).
Dining
In the evening you don’t even need to leave the hotel as Kamana Lakehouse has a fabulous restaurant downstairs with views over the lake. After dinner we curled up in the cosy bar area for a game of chess next to the hanging wood burning stoves(!), all accompanied by a glass of Central Otago pinot noir (it would be rude not to try the local wine in this part of New Zealand). Breakfast is served in the same dining room, and the views over the lake make the perfect start to your day (accompanied by delicious pastries and fresh coffee!).
What else is in the area?
You’ll never run out of things to do in Queenstown. In winter you can hit the ski fields, and in summer there are limitless stunning hiking tracks to explore. The drive to nearby Glenorchy is one of the most beautiful in the world, and let’s not forget Milford Sound, do-able as a day trip from Queenstown. Looking to unwind? Kamana Lakehouse has its own onsite hot tubs with views over Lake Whakatipu.
