Helsinki is an extremely underrated city in Europe. Often overshadowed by its other Scandi neighbours, Helsinki seems to be less well visited. But don’t let that put you off. Known as the white city due to the colour of its buildings, Helsinki is gorgeous.

What’s it like on board? There are several on-board services such as cafes and lounges. Although it’s only a short crossing, it is sometimes possible to book a cabin for some privacy and a power nap.

Is the ferry crossing rough? When I took the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn in September it was all smooth sailing. Most operators use large, stable vessels meaning you’ll hardly notice that you’re on the water!
Is it worth going to Tallinn from Helsinki? The old town in Tallinn is very compact and walkable, so it’s definitely do-able as a day trip. I would however recommend staying at least one night to make the most of it if you can.

Tallinn is extremely pretty, with red-roofed old houses, cobbled streets and onion domes. Like something straight out of a fairy tale. Tallinn is also home to the most delicious cinnamon buns – reason enough in itself for a visit!
