The view from the peak of the Klakkur Mountain has to be one of the most iconic vistas in the Faroe Islands. Surrounded by inky blue sea, and with the islands of Kunoy and Kalsoy rising dramatically out of the water, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. The best thing is that the hike to the summit is fairly short, so the effort to reward ratio is squarely in your favour.
How to get there
Located just outside the town of Klaksvík, the Klakkur is a funny-shaped, but fairly small (413m, 1355ft) mountain. You can easily walk from central Klaksvík to the starting point of the hike at Hálsur. The ascent to the peak of the mountain will then take you around 45 minutes. It can be pretty windy and chilly at the top, so make sure you pack a jacket even if it’s a warm day!
The trail
The start of the trail proper is at a mountain pass called Hálsur, which you can find by first walking along the gravel path Niðan Horn which leads you to a lane called Astarbravt road, which translates as “the love path”. (Incidentally, this is not far from the Klaksvík helipad where you can hop on a helicopter to other parts of the islands).
What you’ll see
The ascent is fairly steep, but the path is well trodden and there are cairns leading the way, so it’s easy to see where you’re meant to go. It doesn’t take long until the views start getting absolutely breathtaking. To the north you’ll see the island of Kunoy, to the west Kalsoy (where you can find the famous lighthouse), to the south you’ll see Hálgafelli and to the east behind you you’ll see the houses and harbour of Klaksvík looking tiny down below.
Afterwards
After the hike I highly recommend popping into Fríða Kaffihús for some hot coffee and cake! Or if you fancy a hot meal, there’s a food cart outside in the middle of Klaksvík that does really good fisk and chips (fish and chips).
