Hiking the Ōmanawanui Track, New Zealand (last updated 12 December 2024). Auckland may be New Zealand’s big city, but that doesn’t mean that you have to feel cut off from nature. The wild west coast, less than an hour’s drive from Auckland itself, is full of beautiful hiking tracks. The North Island does tend to live in the shadow of the stunning South Island as far as travel is concerned, but it’s actually stunning. When I lived in Auckland, as soon as the weekend hit, I would always grab my hiking boots and go..! Read on for my guide to hiking the Ōmanawanui Track.

Why Should I Hike the Ōmanawanui Track?
Some of the best west coast views can be found at the Ōmanawanui track, which was newly re-opened in 2021. This hiking trail had previously been closed for an upgrade for the best part of the previous three years. Situated in the Waitakere Ranges, the Ōmanawanui track has sweeping views of the rugged coastline as you climb tracks cut into the lush green cliffs. Be warned though – you’ll feel the burn in your thighs. This is part of the route that Edmund Hillary used for training before setting off on his famous adventures!
How Long is the Ōmanawanui Track?
- Length: The Ōmanawanui track itself is 12km long. (It also forms part of the longer multi-day Te Ara Tūhura / Hillary Trail).
- Duration: The inclines mean it will take you about 5 hours each way. But even if you just walk a shorter section it’s still worth it.
- Effort / Reward Ratio: The views are absolutely spectacular right from the beginning.
How Difficult is this Hiking Trail?
Hiking the Ōmanawanui Track is not for the faint hearted. Although I wouldn’t class this trail as super hard (some keen beans even use it for trail running), there is a section where you need to pull yourself up a steep bit with a chain. So it wouldn’t be accessible to anyone who is not too steady on their feet. Don’t let that put you off though, you don’t need any technical skills – anyone with a decent level of fitness can do it. You also don’t need to walk the whole thing to get good views.
How to get to the Ōmanawanui Track?
The drive from Auckland takes less than an hour. There’s plenty of space to park at the Ōmanawanui track carpark. The drive itself is a little bit hairy at times, as the road eventually gives way to dirt track. It’s narrow enough that you don’t want to be going too fast! Unfortunately the Waitakere Ranges are not well served by public transport. If you’re from out of town you’re best to hire a car or book onto a tour.
What to Bring to Hike the Ōmanawanui Track?
There’s a decent bit of incline so I’d recommend wearing proper walking boots, but it is possible to do the Ōmanawanui track in trainers. Bring plenty of water. The weather in New Zealand is changeable, so bring some extra layers in case it’s windy. In summer sun cream is a definite must as the walk is pretty exposed.
There are lots beautiful beaches along the coast. As well as some pretty cool waterfall spots. So pack some swimmers if you want to make a day of it and explore the rest of the area.
Is There Accommodation Near the Ōmanawanui Track?
Yes, there are a few airbnbs in the area (search “Piha“). But make sure to book in advance as they can get snapped up pretty quickly. Auckland itself isn’t too far so you can visit just for the day from the city.
Is There any Wildlife?
As with many places in New Zealand there’s plenty of birdlife to see, such as the fantail in the picture below. But if you’re used to hiking in the US or Australia don’t worry – in New Zealand there’s no dangerous wildlife! (Unless you count the South Island’s cheeky kea stealing your snacks..!)
