Book a hotel with a pool
There’s a multitude of gorgeous hotels to choose from. I opted for Anantara Eastern Mangroves as I got a discount through Etihad as I’d booked my flights with them. Sitting by the pool looking out over mangroves was the perfect antidote to my long flight from Melbourne!
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The jewel in Abu Dhabi’s crown, you absolutely must visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque is gleaming white and covered in intricate art. Its design brings together various influences from around the Islamic world. Read my detailed guide here.
Qasr Al Watan
Qasr Al Watan (“Palace of the Nation”) is a working presidential palace where you can learn about Emirati culture. The architecture itself stunning and there are also interactive exhibits. It also houses an impressive circular library with marble floors. You need to wear respectful clothing when visiting.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an architectural marvel as well as an impressive museum. The result of a cultural exchange between the UAE and France, the aim of the museum is to promote intercultural understanding. Buy tickets in advance here.
Book a Sightseeing Tour
If you’re pressed for time, you can let someone else do the hard work and book onto a guided tour that will show you all the highlights that Abu Dhabi has to offer. Book a full day sightseeing tour of Abu Dhabi here.
Visit a shopping mall
The shopping malls in Abu Dhabi are amazing (and air conditioned!). Perfect if you need to stock up on anything for your onwards journey.
What to wear
It’s incredibly hot in Abu Dhabi, so definitely opt for loose comfy clothing. It’s not as conservative as you might imagine, but I still preferred to dress fairly modestly. You don’t necessarily need a head scarf, but I enjoyed having one as the sun was so strong! Normal swimwear is fine in the hotel pools.
Transport
The best way to get around Abu Dhabi is to either hire a car or use Uber. The hotels can also arrange transport for you. Or, try the Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus service (more info here).
Etihad Stopover Packages
Did you know that Etihad Airways actually offer exclusive stopover packages if you book your flights with them? Hotel stays are bundled with pre-planned city tours so that you can just relax and enjoy your visit. And did I mention that it’s free?!! What a great idea for an extended layover. And yes, if it’s as hot as you say, a hotel with a pool is a must!
