How to travel to the Faroe Islands is the most common question I get asked when I tell people I’ve visited these beautiful islands. Read on for a definitive guide on how to get to the Faroe Islands:
Where are the Faroe Islands?
The Faroe Islands are located in the North Atlantic, between Iceland and Scotland. Like Greenland, they are an autonomous territory of Denmark. There are 18 main islands, and many more smaller ones.
Do the Faroe Islands have their own airline?
The Faroe Islands have their own airline called Atlantic Airways. At the time of writing, they offer flights between the Faroes and Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Germany, France and Spain, and recently introduced a route to New York! When I visited I flew from Edinburgh, which is a short 1 hour flight. Note that some of the routes are seasonal, with more flights over summer.
Do other airlines fly there?
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) also have flights to the Faroe Islands from Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. At the time of writing this is the only other airline to fly to the Faroe Islands.
Where is the airport in the Faroe Islands?
The airport is on the island of Vágar, which has some amazing places to visit like the optical illusion lake. (Read: The Magical Island of Vágar: Gateway to the Faroe Islands). You can then travel to the main island of Streymoy by rental car or bus (or helicopter!). There you’ll find the capital Tórshavn.
Can I get to the Faroe Islands by boat?
Yes! The routes / availability keep changing so best to check the provider websites. At the time of writing, you can travel to the Faroe Islands by ferry from Denmark and Iceland with Smyril Line. The best thing about this is that you can bring a vehicle with you and avoid having to get an expensive rental car on the islands.

Money in the Faroe Islands (DKK)
In the Faroe Islands you can use either the Faroese Króna or the Danish Krone. They are technically both separate versions of the same currency (DKK), so any card transactions will appear as Danish Krone. To get the best rates, I highly recommend getting a WISE card before you go. This allows you to convert money into DKK (or any other currency!) at the best rates and then use your card as a debit card or withdraw cash in the Faroe Islands without hidden fees. Wise is a UK-based financial services company (available in most countries worldwide) and is highly regulated in the various regions it operates in (in the UK it is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority).
