It starts to get pretty chilly in New Zealand in June/July, but that’s no reason to stop exploring. Anyway, the shoulder season can be one of the best for snagging some good deals on cosy rural retreats! If you’re in need of a change of scenery, you’ll find the perfect dose of solace at the aptly named Hideout Cottage, an idyllic cabin with a floor to ceiling window looking out over nothing but luscious native New Zealand forest.
What is it?
The perfect getaway – a luxurious cabin with king bed, private terrace, stunning views and absolute blissful silence. This may be a cabin in the woods, but the crisp linen, tasteful furnishings and walk-in pebble floor shower ensure you’ll feel more Hilton than hut. Cosy up with a glass of red wine and a book and watch the sun set, eventually fading into New Zealand’s famous dark starry nights.
Where can I find it?
The Hideout is just over an hour’s drive from Auckland on the way to Mangawhai. If you take the route via Matakana you can stop off at the Saturday farmers market to pick up some goodies before carrying on to the cabin.
What to eat
The Hideout has a kitchenette with fridge, kettle and microwave, as well as a barbecue out on the deck. If you’re feeling a bit fancy you can have a deluxe grazing platter for two including cheese, charcuterie and seasonal fruit and veg pre-ordered to your room.
What else is in the area?
Mangawhai is knows for its endless beaches, perfect for surfers on one side and swimmers on the other. Soak up the views along the Mangawhai Cliff Walk. Tāwharanui Regional Park is nearby and home to Anchor Bay, my favourite surf spot and just general beach hangout in NZ. The park is also home to a multitude of native birdlife and last winter we even spotted a rare takahē. Matakana is famous for its farmers market, cute cafes and gift shops.

Such a super cute cabin! I love making the most of the winter here in Melbourne and getting away in a cute cottage or cabin. I’d love to do the same in NZ too when I make it over again soon!
