Amsterdam is the perfect recipe for a city break: walk-able, pretty canals, flowers and more culture than you can shake a selfie stick at. But best of all, it’s a complete foodie heaven. Read on for some of my favourite eats in the Dutch capital:
Brunch…
Bar Botanique
The green oasis of Bar Botanique will be one of the most relaxing places you have ever eaten brunch. The interior design is to die for: enjoy avocado toast while looking out over a sea of plants – a true millennial eye orgasm. The good news? It’s open all day so you can come back for dinner and cocktails!
Pluk
Pluk is the place in Amsterdam to have brunch. The menu of this Insta-worthy cafe constantly evolves, but they always have fresh pastries and pretty breakfast bowls as well as a selection of cooked brunch options. The perfect balance of healthy and yummy, Pluk also has a “sweet corner” for those of us wanting a naughty treat at the end of the meal.
Snacks…
Vlaams friteshuis vleminckx
You simply cannot go to Amsterdam and not have chips (ahem that’s fries for my non-British friends). The Dutch do them differently, but oh so good. And the best place to try them is Vlaams friteshuis vleminckx, a small hole in the wall outfit tucked away in a quiet backstreet in the centre of town. They describe themselves as a Sausmeester (“sauce master”) and it’s certainly true that they have quite a selection of different sauces to choose from.
Van Wonderen Stroopwafels
You just have to try the Dutch favourite: the stroopwafel. The best place I found for these is Van Wonderen Stroopwafels, where they’ll make them fresh in front of you and where you can choose from a whole selection of different toppings. Best enjoyed sitting outside with your legs dangling over the edge of one of the canals, true Dutch style.
Something fancy…
Salmuera
Salmuera, situated in the heart of Amsterdam, has one of the most mouth-wateringly delicious menus I’ve ever seen. While not strictly Dutch (Salmuera focuses on Latin American flavours), it is certainly a go-to spot amongst the locals. Perfect for a romantic evening, the interior is dimly lit with candles, or in summer you can sit outside on the patio. I’d definitely recommend making a reservation for this one!
De Luwte
De Luwte is another perfect date night spot in Amsterdam. The restaurant serves traditional Dutch cuisine with a contemporary twist, scrummy cocktails and wine pairings, all set against a backdrop of canal views. Reservations recommended.
