Patrika Gate, a candy-coloured series of arches tucked away in the southern part of Jaipur, Rajasthan, has become one of the city’s most photographed spots. The outside is a vibrant rose-pink colour, in keeping with Jaipur’s reputation as India‘s “Pink City”. The inside however will absolutely take your breath away. Step inside and you’re met with a kaleidoscope of colour. Towering walls covered in intricate paintings depicting Rajasthan’s rich history rise up on all sides to meet beautifully patterned ceilings. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a palace of dreams.
It may be modern (Patrika gate was built in 2016), but don’t let that put you off. The artistry really captures the essence of centuries-old Rajasthani design. Where is Patrika Gate?
Patrika Gate is located in the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, a city in the North West of India. It’s actually only a short drive from Jaipur International Airport, so you can make a quick pit stop there on your way into the city if you’re travelling light. An Uber from Jaipur old town to Patrika Gate takes around 30 minutes.
The gate itself is built on Jahawar Circle Park, which is basically a giant roundabout (traffic signal) with a park in the middle. You can also visit the lesser known Toran Dwar gate on the other side of the park.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Patrika Gate?
Patrika Gate is open all day and night – there are no set opening hours.
I recommend visiting during Golden Hour (just after sunrise and just before sunset) as this is when the light will be the most beautiful, adding a magical glow to the pink tones of the gate.
Note that it will almost always be busy as it’s a popular spot for local photographers taking engagement photos. Everyone was very considerate when I was there, so I had plenty of chances to take pictures with no one else in the background – I just had to be patient.
It’s probably best to avoid midday, as it can get very hot – the Rajasthani sun is incredibly strong!

Why is Patrika Gate so Famous?
Patrika Gate has become one of the most Instagrammable places in Jaipur. It offers a stunning background for portrait photography.
However, for tourists, Patrika Gate also provides a lovely illustration of Rajasthan’s history. The various frescoes tell stories of Jaipur’s royal history and cultural heritage. There are also mythological themes from Indian folklore. It may be modern, but it’s actually a great place to have a look at if you’re interested in learning about Indian history and culture!
History of Patrika Gate
City gates have always been a part of Jaipur’s history. When the city was originally built in 1727, its founder Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II ordered for a wall to be built encircling the city. This wall had seven gates. An eighth gate was later added in the 1940s, modelled on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. When Patrika Gate was built in 2016, it became known as the ninth gate of Jaipur. In fact, symbolism of the number nine is incorporated into the design: there are nine pavilions, each measuring 9 feet wide.
Patrika Gate was commissioned by the Indian national newspaper media company “Patrika” and so that’s where its name derives from.
Photography Tips for Visiting Patrika Gate
- If you’d like to capture the scale of the painted arches, consider bringing a wide angle lens.
- It’s a public place, so tripods are permitted (please be considerate of others).
- You can take gorgeous photos both inside and outside the gate.
- Careful if someone offers to help you – they’ll likely expect a tip for their work. Don’t feel bad for saying no. But, if you’re willing to tip, this can be super helpful for solo travellers.

How to Get to Patrika Gate
Uber: The easiest way to travel around Jaipur is to book a car or a tuk tuk using Uber. If you hail a tuk tuk from the street be prepared to haggle. You can check the Uber app for the correct price and then round it up a bit (tuk tuk drivers often don’t have change – or at least say they don’t!).
